I assume this was rendered with the 3Delight engine -- it might be neat to post versions of old pictures like this re-rendered in Iray, just to see the difference 
(Assuming the materials/shaders are compatible or work in Iray -- I've seen many items include both 3Delight and Iray material presets, but I've never attempted to use a 3DL material under Iray.)
